I started helping baby squirrels when my niece and nephew found 2 young squirrels. I was lucky enough to know someone that had rehabbed a couple and guided me through the process. Released into my backyard and saw them occasionally. What a great feeling to know they were free and I helped them get there. Up until about 5 years ago I had successfully rehabbed about 5 squirrels. A friend found a pinkie and knew I had squirrel experience. I had never had one so small but was able to reach out to a friend of a friend who rehabbed wildlife. That person became my rock. Guiding and advising me to raise and release my first pinkie squirrel. Word spread through my friends, acquaintances and a few Facebook groups. Unfortunately there seems to be a great need for people to help these innocent and helpless creatures and I'm so happy that I can. It can be heartbreaking at times when you lose a baby no matter how hard you try. I am very lucky to have a vet that sees wildlife, without him I'm sure I would have lost more. Next to being a mom and grandmother, raising and releasing squirrels is one of the greatest joys in my life Watching them jumping in the trees, happy and free.
