I came home one late night to an opossum helpless in my yard. At the time, I was uneducated to his needs. I spent the next several hours searching for someone who could educate and assist me with how to help him. That opossum turned out to be one of the sweetest I’ve ever had in my possession. Dexter, as I named him, remained a part of my family until his eventual passing. I came to discover that he was blind from head trauma that he experienced and wandered into my yard starving and confused. I took great pride in my care for him. His gentle nature and complete trust in me sealed my fate to become a licensed wildlife rehabber. Now I have the pleasure of working with opossums, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, and other small rodents, who are displaced, orphaned, or injured. Some days are difficult, but I’m honored to know I’m making a difference for these animals.

I’ve always had an unconditional love for animals. There’s never been a time in my life in which my home has not been filled with my four-legged family. I take great pride in my compassion and care for the animals that come through my door. It’s been a wonderful experience to learn all the things that I have as a licensed wildlife rehabber and also spread that knowledge to others, including my young daughter. I think it’s so important for kids to learn responsibility and compassion through animals. Doing so creates a better world. I love that she too considers herself a little rehabber.
