Jan was volunteering at a Nature Centre and was encouraged to get involved with wildlife rehabilitation. She was "hooked" at the first orientation, and went on to get a license. Then she moved to Saskatchewan and had to convince the government to give out permits. In 2005 she got her first Saskatchewan permit and began caring for whatever arrived on the doorstep…. mostly birds, but eventually mammals too. From 20 animals in 2005 to 150 in 2010 when they founded LSWR as an organization, up to 1166 in 2018, the number of animals in need just keeps increasing. Jan says that she LOVES the mammals, but she also knows the value and importance of the songbirds. Those little balls of feathered energy are often overlooked in conservation, and many rehabilitators don't have the time to care for them (half-hour feedings ALL day!). So Jan has specialized in caring for them. She says that they bring her joy, and most of her life is spent with them; bird watching, caring for them, and enjoying them!
