Erica H.
Erica has always loved animals and has a way with them. She was 19 years old working as a field secretary for a construction company and everyone knew she loved animals. One of the tower crane operators brought her a bat in need of help. Erica called and searched for someone to help it, and at the time she knew nothing about bats. Erica explains, "one place said to remove the head and turn it in to test for rabies. Nope. That was not going to happen – it showed no signs of being sick. I was not going to kill it. I kept it over night and continued my search the next day. Finally I got a hold of a lady from bat conservation and wildlife rescue. She came to my office got the bat. She was so nice and informative. She had several bats with her and was happy to show them and answer my numerous questions. The bat I had was a pregnant Mexican Free-tail Bat. Being summer in Texas with over 100 degree days, if a bat does not find water in one night it will be too weak to fly. I saved two lives." The experience inspired Erica to want to do even more to help wildlife, so she became a rehabber to do just that.
