I’ve always seemed to understand animals more than humans and no one understood that quite like one of my first true friends and mentors, my Neighborhood Crazy Cat Lady, Cathy. From a young age I was exposed to grassroots TNVR before anyone knew what it was… Cathy took feral toms, Momma cats and kittens off the street one litter at a time. She would nurse them to health and later give them sanctuary or find them forever homes. This intentional community effort has inspired me throughout my life. Since she has passed I have the honor of loving her cats as my own and honoring her through the spirit of rescue. I proudly now carry on the legacy of Neighborhood Cat Lady, and it is a privilege to be the one most everyone calls when an animal is in need.
After recent Hurricane Milton devastated our community squirrels were quite literally all over our neighborhood due to the tree damage. I was able to help multiple squirrels in the immediate aftermath of the storm, including raising a pinkie thanks to a generator and the generosity of our neighbors with power. He was aptly named Ray after a kind Floridian lineman who helped restore power to our neighborhood. Since then I have connected with a local Rehabber who has helped guide me to raise more baby squirrels that neighbors have found in the following months as tree damage is assessed and dealt with. She has been impressed with my nurturing of these babies and it’s been my honor to begin to help assist her in ensuring these tiny creatures have a shot at living their best wild lives.
