I’ve been fascinated by bats since I first learned about their incredible diversity—there are over 1460 known species worldwide—and met a pallid bat named Junior face to face. I taught elementary school and my students learned about bats, too, and helped me become a spokesperson for bats. Since I’ve been retired, I’ve been helping with orphaned and injured bats who come into our care. This past month I’ve cared for over 35 bats of 9 different species. Baby bats will be needing my help very soon and an incubator would be much better for them than the heating pads I currently use.
