Karen has always loved animals and wanted to help them. One day her husband and son were remodeling an old house and her son accidentally stepped on a baby cottontail under a pile of leaves and broke its leg. They brought the injured baby home to Karen and she bandaged it, bottle fed and cared for the baby, and also did daily physical therapy with him until he was strong enough to be released. She still sees him from to time, living out his happy life in the wild. After having to leave her career due to a medical issue, Karen found that caring for animals helped alleviate depression. She now cares for squirrels, raccoons and cottontails. She says, "these critters light up my life every day."
