I have always felt a special connection to animals from a young age. That connection led me to my passion for wildlife rehabilitation. My caring husband Mark shares the same feelings and works with me as a team. Our journey started in 2019 when an orphaned fawn needed to be rescued. Since then, we have tirelessly dedicated our lives to caring for different species of wildlife and educating the public. Education is a vital part of wildlife rehabilitation. In the photo I am holding an opossum. Many people aren’t aware that opossums are the unsung heroes in the Lyme Disease epidemic. Black-legged ticks try to feed on opossums and few of them survive the experience. Opossums are extraordinarily groomers, killing more than 95% of the ticks that try to feed on them. It's in our best interest to have opossum neighbors. This means keeping their habitat intact with thoughtful land use planning, tolerating them in our yards, and driving slowly to avoid opossum collisions. As wildlife rehabilitators we continuously work toward improving the quality of care given to wild animals undergoing rehabilitation. An incubator will be extremely helpful for our goal. Orphaned, sick and injured wildlife didn’t choose that fate. It’s up to a select few to see the world through their helpless eyes and do what it takes to give them a second chance.
