Laura was working in a vet clinic when a client brought in baby squirrels after a tropical storm. They contacted a local wildlife rescue and when Laura went to drop the babies off, she met the coordinator/ director at the time. They talked extensively about the animals and the need for more rehabbers in the area, especially ones with veterinary assistance skills. Laura began rehabbing squirrels for them until Hurricane Katrina took everything. After coming home to what was left after the storm, Laura began rehabbing on her own since they no longer had a clinic. Several years later, she touched base with an old rehabber friend who got her back into the swing of things. Laura has been one of the main rehabbers on her end of the coast ever since.
