I have always had a passion for all things nature related. I initially went to school for Ecological Restoration at Trent University. I thought I would end up working in the field of land-based science, but instead my job search took me elsewhere. Not wanting a typical office job, I came across the job posting for Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue. Fast forward a few years and my current position is now the Environmental Education & Outreach Coordinator here at the rehabilitation centre. I love being able to educate and break down myths about Canadian Wildlife, through school presentations, onsite tours, summer camps, forest & nature school, fairs & other community events, etc. Why do I enjoy leading these educational events? Not only it is a positive and educational experience for our community, but it also helps provide funding for our wildlife rehabilitation centre.
I myself am not a full-time hospital staff, but do help out when needed. Even though I am not always in our Rehabilitation buildings, I know what a new Baby Warm incubator means to my fellow staff and co-workers. It means as a centre, as a team, we are able to take in more sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.
It is a wonderous thing to see an orphan baby squirrel come in with its eyes closed, ear holes not open yet, and completely pink with no hair; to see that squirrel grow to be a full healthy adult and then be released back to the wild, its heart warming. Not all days in wildlife rehabilitation are easy ones, but it is the success stories and connections made that make this job worth wild.
