I had worked in a veterinary clinic where it was not unusual to see wildlife brought to us for care and then later went to work for the State Game & Fish Dept. Co-workers were always bringing small mammals or birds into my office and asking if I wanted to raise it to release. During my time with Game & Fish, I met and became friends with two rehabilitators specializing in birds ultimately learning from them and becoming a sub permittee under one's license. After several years I successfully completed exams to obtain my own license. I have always felt this is a calling, doing what I can to make a difference to our native wildlife and while not all cases brought into care have a happy ending those that are released bring such satisfaction.
