As most Rehabbers, I got into this field by accident. A 10 week old orphan eastern grey squirrel crawled onto my husbands shoe as he was walking down the sidewalk, desperate for help. My husband brought the small female squirrel to me, and I slowly (this was before the internet!) figured out how to care for her. As a lifelong animal lover, any jobs I have had have always been animal related in some sort, from Petsmart to doggy daycare, I feel like I’ve done it all- but nothing compares to the joy that fills my heart when after I’ve put hundreds of hours (and usually hundreds of dollars) into raising an orphaned baby squirrel or opossum, and on release day to see them discover their world for the first time. It’s a reward that to me, is priceless- and well worth all the hard work, time and tears that I put into raising each and every one. I believe that every life matters, that every animal deserves a chance to live, and I’ve dedicated the rest of my life to see that happen.
