I entered the rehabbing world officially when I was returning home from work and found a mother possum and her joeys who had been hit by a car. Three joeys survived, and upon finding them I called my rehab contact, Kathleen, and promptly said something along the lines of "omg what do I do, and can you take them?" She worked for several hours to find one of their volunteers who could take them, but unfortunately they were full at that time with about 70 opossums. She then approached me and asked if I'd be willing to volunteer for them if I receive the proper training and have the room for them. That night they walked me through some of the basics like warming them, then the babies spent the night getting warm and starting hydration. The next morning, Kathleen came over and walked me through the formula, hydration, stimulation and everything else I would need to know. Then from there I was thrust into the world of opossums and it has been the most invaluable experience and I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to raise healthy, strong opossums that can go back into the wild and play their role in the environment.
