I've done domestic pet rescue for about 20 years, I love caring for medically needy animals but after caring for them in such dire straights it's difficult to give them up to a new home. My heart just couldn't do it anymore. Then I found a Star Nosed Mole in my yard. I had no idea what to do with it. It had three large larvae in its side. That's what brought me to talking to wildlife rescuers here in Maine. I started out with transporting and coordinating transport since we're such a large state. I soon found that didn't fulfill the need that I had. I'm in a fairly central location in the state and started to be the drop off point for finders before the animal could go to our closest rehab. Sometimes it was really late at night and I just couldn't make the trip until the next day so I'd keep them for those few hours overnight. I absolutely love caring for them for those few hours and find that the most stressful thing for me is maintaining temp to keep them safe. I'm using a bin with an electric heating pad and a digital thermometer. It works, but I don't sleep when I have them because I don't completely trust it to maintain.
